Work Injuries

Advanced Health Clinic - Work Injuries

A work injury is often a cause of continuous pain and disability. You might sustain a slip and fall that results in low back pain, or suffer from neck pain sometimes called "tech neck" as it is related to the use of technology. In many cases, a chiropractor can provide treatment; chiropractic care and physiotherapy are non-invasive, drug-free ways to deal with work injuries. Here’s some information about work injury, courtesy of Advanced Health Clinic in Corpus Christi.

Work Injury Data

The National Safety Council reports that a worker is injured on the job every seven seconds that’s more than 4,000,000 people each year. Most of those injuries are preventable. The top three categories of work injury are overexertion, such as lifting or repetitive motion injuries; contact with objects and equipment, such as being struck by something, and slips, trips, and falls. Service occupations (firefighting, law enforcement and nursing), transportation, manufacturing, installation/repair, and construction are the occupations in which most work injuries occur. Many work injuries begin with subtle symptoms; if not treated, they can progress to severe disability.

Work Injury Symptoms

Musculoskeletal pain is the most common work injury symptom. It might be carpal tunnel syndrome from keyboarding, low back pain from lifting or poor posture, or neck pain from a computer screen at the wrong height. However, other symptoms can arise from work injuries. For example, a spinal misalignment in the thoracic area can affect digestion, pulse and blood pressure because the nerves that control the heart and digestive system run out of the thoracic spine. Chronic pain, limited mobility and function, numbness, tingling, and other musculoskeletal symptoms can all result from work injuries. It’s easy to think that these problems result from increasing age, but even if they do, chiropractic treatment can often help relieve the symptoms and prevent lost work time.

Chiropractic Care

Your chiropractor is ideally situated to help you with work injuries. Chiropractic care is based on the concept that musculoskeletal alignment is critical for proper organ and nervous system function. The chiropractor helps your body find or return to balance by adjusting the joints as necessary. Physiotherapy that includes corrective exercise is also part of the treatment you receive. In addition, a chiropractor can help you correct postural problems that may be contributing to your pain or make dietary recommendations to reduce inflammatory foods. Many chiropractors are also trained in work ergonomics designing the workplace to fit the worker rather than expecting the worker to adjust to the tools and equipment.
